Grouped under the reference AMS 6970 are the documents which passed to the Sussex Archaeological Society following the sale of the Sheffield Park estate in 1954. The circumstances of the sale are described in Daniel Waley and Christopher Whittick, 'The Earl, his daughter, her brother's housekeeper and the cat: the remarkable story of the Sheffield Park archives' in Archives 36 (2011) 62-78. The four court books (AMS 6970/1-2) were deposited with the Sussex Archaeological Society via the Department of Manuscripts at the British Museum following the acquisition of Sheffield Park by L. F. McCardle, who transferred to the mansion his firm New Welbeck Ltd, holders of a royal warrant for the supply of vacuum cleaners. His advertising manager Mr Stacey, described by the Society's secretary Frank Bentham Stevens as 'a weird fellow, but keen', assembled a collection of documents for a proposed museum at the house, but on his leaving Sussex in 1956 was persuaded to hand the books over on deposit. The later of the two plans (AMS 6970/4/2) was found at Sheffield Place by Norman Norris, probably during the view which preceded the sale of its contents between 8 and 10 March 1954; he transferred it to the Sussex Archaeological Society in April. The circumstances of the Society's acquisition of the earlier map, AMS 6970/4/1, are unclear, but a similar provenance can be assumed. Further documents remained at Sheffield Park, to be offered in two sales, conducted by McCardle's executors, in 1971 and 1972. ESRO competed on both occasions, but with little success, although much of the material eventually found its way to Lewes.

The majority of these scrapbooks contain postcards or photographs as they were in the late 19th or early 20th centuries alongside photographs taken in the latter half of the 20th century by CS.
