In Folder: DB - BRIGHTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
Plans of buildings designed by the Brighton Borough Council.architects including schools and old peoples' homes. They were originally given the prefix AR by Brighton Borough Council.
1946-c1988
Property owners or their architects or builders submitted these plans for the Works Committee's and the Borough Council's approval for compliance with the Borough's Building Regulations. They also submitted a notice which was recorded in the registers at DB/D/2. These give dates of consideration, whether or not approved, and notes of inspection. The numbers are as allocated sequentially upon submission of the plans to the Engineer's Department. The dates earlier on appear to the date of receipt and later the date of (normally) the fortnightly meeting of the relevant committee. The location of the proposed building work is given here at the title; the description gives, separated by back slashes: description of building work / owner / builder or architect. Data was taken from the original indexes to plans. In most instances these descriptions do not show road numbers but some entries have been augmented with road numbers taken from the plans. Occasionally road names were changed between the submission of the plan and the house being built and in this instance the new address is shown in square brackets after the original entry eg, Park Road West [60-66 Queens Park Road, evens], Brighton. There are about 7000 plans, numbered 1-9094 (except 3100-3999, 7100-7999 numbers not used) with some numbers duplicated by the addition of A, and some plans not received including nos 1-79, 81-88, 90-251. This list is a transcript of DB/D/6/1 and 2. Three indexes by street for 1862-92, 1893-1916 and 1916-32, are at DB/D/6/4, 5 and 6. At DB/D/3/1 and 2 are an index by street to plans for both new buildings and alterations, 1861-1904, compiled in the 1930s. Original descriptions were taken from the indexes: where these descriptions differ from those found on the plan additional information has been added in brackets. Original plans 9342-9976 do not survive but fiche copies are held in DB/D/134.
